Baseball, a bit late.

IMG_2320So, I guess I’m a bit late with this, but here goes.

The Washington Nationals, once again, provided a rather unspectacular season of baseball for us new fans here in the nation’s capital. Sure, the season was not without it’s share of moments, specifically, the opening of shiny new Nationals Park, Ryan Zimmerman providing a walk-off home run in the ninth inning of the home opener, etc. But in the end, the Nationals again owned the basement of Major League Baseball.

I think I’m in the minority about this, but I will continue to look up from where the Nationals have been during their short tenure here in DC. In all reality, the “fans” that expected the Nationals to be a top-notch contender since the moment they set foot here, are seriously jaded. Considering the way that the baseball machine treated the Expos before their transfer out of Montreal, it’s no surprise that the team was in disarray when they arrived.

However, after a few years of crappy baseball, what was once the worst farm system in baseball has had the opportunity to draft high, cultivate talent (some of which we started to see this year), and greatly improve the quality of the farm system into one of the best in all of baseball. This should be regarded as a good thing, and as a hint of things to come.

So while the Nationals experience a few more years of futility on their way up the ladder of the National League East, I’ll patiently wait and watch as the farm system produces some young players that this team can call their own. That is when the team will succeed. I just hope the expectorant fans don’t run this team out of town before that happens.
