Metro to eliminate paper bus transfers

IMG_2422This is old news at this point, but I do still have to say that this is a bold move by WMATA. According to a press release by the regional bus and rail authority, paper transfers will be completely eliminated beginning on January 4, 2009.

I could understand projecting the implementation date of this plan out to say mid-2009, but so soon? While I appluad the move for eliminating paper waste, as well as numerous other drawbacks of the transfers, my biggest question revolves around WMATA’s ability to adequately prepare everyone for the switch in so little time.

The overall goal, of course, is to further encourage riders to use the SmartTrip card… which makes sense. It’s reliable, secure, environmentally friendly, and will save a ton of money (which we all know Metro can use!). According to the release, Metro has already given 50,000 SmartTrip cards to social service agencies in the region, but I’m curious to see how this plays out with tourists and disadvantaged and low-income riders.

But only time will tell… Have you got your SmartTrip card? If not, get all the information you could need and even purchase one here.
