The Black Crowes at the 930 Club

IMG_2405Our first time back at the 930 Club in quite some time… Nicole and I saw The Black Crowes on Saturday night, the last of three consecutive nights for the blues-rock band from Atlanta.

I’ve never been able to say that I’m a “fan” of TBC as I’ve never really heard any of their music except for what’s been on the radio over the past 15 years. Of course, that’s a limited selection of what they have to offer, most notably “Remedy,” “She Talks to Angels,” and “Hard to Handle.” While the “big three” are great tunes, I had absolutely no idea what to expect upon walking in to their show on Saturday night.

Well, you can say that I’m satisfied. The show was amazing… You have to understand, I hold a special place in my heart for the 930 Club, and thinking back, I don’t think I can say I’ve ever seen a bad show there. 930 is a concert venue like no other.

But as for the Crowes, well… they kicked ass. They had split the show into two halves, focusing more on rhythmic blues and jams during the first half and more on some loud, classic rock (I don’t mean the genre classic rock, but more along the lines of a “rock” show). The bands ability to blend the blues with rock was actually quite superb. Bass-lines were phenomenal, and during some of their longer jam sessions (at one point, the entire band played seasmlessly for about 35 minutes, flowing from song to jam to song, so on and so forth, without so much as a break to re-tune instruments or adjust themselves!), they took the time to highlight each band member with a few-minutes solo.

Combine the quality of the music (the band seemed to be “on” on Saturday night… though this was my first time seeing them, so who knows) with the on-stage antics of lead singer Chris Robinson, and you have a high-octane, blues and rock show to remember. I know I certainly will.
