Patchwork Condominum
I’ve always been a fan of this particular “vista” (I hate that word actually, but a better one is escaping me right now). This is a view of the C+O Canal in Georgetown as seen from the rooftop patio at my office. Before we moved our office back in July, we had a similar view of the same building (3303 Water Street), but from the opposite angle across the canal.
But back to the building… this is a condo development built by Eastbanc and completed in 2004. Designed by local architect Frank Schlesinger, the building has an industrial, brick-and-glass style that is intended to evoke the feel of turn-of-the-century industrial Georgetown. The north facade over the canal is dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows with square grilles, mimicking the wrought-iron windows of factories and warehouses of of the late 20th Century, and is interspersed with the vertical pillars of brick which further give the building it’s rhythm.
The fun begins at night, though, when the units light up. With the different styles of shades that the owners have installed, it’s a fun little play of light and shadow, transparency and opacity. This is definitely not the best shot I could have taken (first off, it’s taken with my digital point-and-shoot, but I also set the self-timer, sat the camera on the railing of our patio, and set the exposure to 10 sec.; very un-scientific), but I think it’s a fun one nonetheless.
